To mark the publication of Claus Richter’s “LSBTIQ+ Erinnerungsort Düsseldorf” (LSBTIQ+ Place of Remembrance Düsseldorf), we cordially invite you to the book launch on December 4, 2025, starting at 5 p.m. at the KIT Café. We look forward to your participation and kindly ask you to RSVP by November 28, 2025, to kunstkommission@duesseldorf.de.
The publication “LSBTIQ+ Erinnerungsort Düsseldorf von Claus Richter” documents the creation of the work “Ein seltsam klassisches Denkmal” (A Strange Classical Monument), which was inaugurated in October 2021 on the Rhine meadow in Düsseldorf. Between the Apollo Varieté and the KIT (Kunst im Tunnel), a classical-looking group of bronze figures now stands, raising their fists in a gesture of defiance and their hands in a victory sign toward the sky.
The artist Claus Richter conceived this ensemble as a place of remembrance for people persecuted because of their sexual identity and as a lively meeting place for the LGBTIQ+ community. Inspired by the appearance of classical monuments, which depict historical figures larger than life and heroically, Richter had four people from different gender and sexual spectrums immortalized in bronze, united in struggle and solidarity, representing the many ways of life within the queer community. The publication, which is now available, is richly illustrated and accompanied by texts describing the development and creation of the site, from the first meetings and early models to the bronze casting, the opening, and the first major celebration on the banks of the Rhine.
Claus Richter (born in 1971 in Lippstadt) lives and works in Cologne. His artistic practice ranges from installations, paintings, objects, and videos to puppet shows and performances.
